The Muslim Brotherhood (MB), or Jamā‛at al-Ikhwān al-Muslimīn, is a transnational Sunni Islamist movement that constitutes one of the most significant ideological challenges to liberal democratic orders in the 21st century. It was founded in Egypt in 1928 by Hassan al-Banna, and has developed an international network since at least the 1950s, for which Europe has been an important base.1 Today, it operates as a sophisticated, multi-tiered global network that has successfully transitioned from a revolutionary Middle Eastern movement into a participationist force within Western societies, including in the United Kingdom.
