The CIE, through initiatives like the publication of CIE S 026/E:2018 “System for Metrology of Optical Radiation for ipRGC-Influenced Responses to Light”, played a key role in establishing standards for measuring how different aspects of light affect our eyes. This includes defining specific functions, quantities and metrics to describe how optical radiation stimulates various photoreceptor types, which can influence non-visual effects of light on the human retina through melanopsin-expressing intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs).
